Check-in on the Base #14: New Album Announcement
A 20 song double LP concept album: What's Left of the Right, some time in Nashville, and a 138 year old piano
Howdy Readers,
In a deviation from the usual “Check-in on the Base” podcast format, I am coming to you via video from an old farm house at the bottom of a hill in Nashville, TN. Speaking of formatting - I’ve been enjoying Reels on Instagram and conditioned myself to shoot videos in portrait mode…next video update will be done in landscape for a more pleasant viewing experience.
More to cover than a king size bed. Here’s what’s important.
I’m releasing my new album, “What’s Left of the Right” and you will receive it for free as a paid subscriber to this Substack. Offer ends February 2, 2024 in which I will be performing a vinyl release show at Darke Hall in Regina, SK with very special guests Belle Plaine & Lachlan Neville. So, let’s break it all down:
I am about to release my sixth studio album! “What’s Left of the Right”,
a 20 song double LP concept record that tells the story of my rural upbringing, the shifting political landscape at home and what I’ve discovered as my role in those dynamics. It is both an aggressive assault on the establishment while recognizing that a tender-heartedness is the only way to elevate us as a society. There is so much to dig into with this album and “The Straight & The Narrow” is the greater liner notes; backstories to the songs, expansion on themes, and insight into players…in fact, it’s already begun. The album release will unfold through a series of stages. First, an exclusive vinyl release. Those of you that have been attentive over the last few months are aware that upgrading to a paid subscription is the agreement required to receive this record, shipping included, free of charge. What you didn’t know is it was a double LP of 20 tunes. This offer is exclusive to North America and ends February 2, 2024. First round of mail-out will happen the end of January.
On February 2, 2024 I will be performing a vinyl release party at the newly renovated Darke Hall in Regina, Saskatchewan alongside my wife, Belle Plaine and the incredible, Lachlan Neville. Tickets are on sale now HERE
This is the announcement video I posted to my Instagram yesterday.
A few points specifically in regards to the initial “Check-in on the Base” video at the top of the page.
How crazy is it that I am in a house with Miles Davis’ piano and it is encouraged that I write on it?! There was a tornado warning the third day I got into Nashville (truthfully, it scared the heck out of me) but once the warning passed, a beautiful lightning storm came through. I sat at the piano and wrote for Dad. Needless to say the deep emotional work.
Speaking of writing for Dad. He was a massive George Strait fan and I had an idea for a concept album to be recorded by the man himself. Writers spend their lives hoping to get a song recorded by George Strait and I have the audacity as a relatively unknown songwriter to write him a record. Yes, that it how my heart works. I want to choose my words carefully, as I am in Nashville for many-a-reasons right now. It is predominantly to write and this is something I am working on it my own time. I have the freedom to create whatever I want. There are four writing projects that are being pursued. And if you can see it in your heart and have the courage to speak it, the universe will conspire in your favour.
This is the kind of thing you are supporting as a paid subscriber. My newfound clarity in the manifestation process. Please consider becoming one, I have a lot to offer. Thanks crew, I’ll leave you with this image created by Stephanie Kuse, one of the many visuals for the upcoming release. It sums this record up beautifully.
