Check-in on the Base #23: Music Videos in Bedrooms
rolling with Gen Z, a weekend with little jack films, and time at the farm
Howdy Readers,
My family has found a rhythm with our time shared between the road, our place in the city and living at the farm. It seems like a healthy upbringing for my son. All with their own benefits and lessons. I had vivid recollections and memories come to me while in Arcola this weekend - having spent the first three years of my life there with mom and dad owing the Auction Mart. Point being, not only do you remember experiences at ages younger than 3, they act as core memories. So, my little guy gets access to “coffee dates and kid lattes” and being tossed on the back of a goat by his older cousins. Not to mention, green rooms.
Just like the early days, I’m at the farm creating. That’s been a theme my whole adult life, return to the farm to create. This weekend it was music videos. Yes, there was a bass performance into a fisheye camera lens. I got some pretty epic nostalgia comin’ yer way, folks.
Swingin’ back to the show at the Mac Murray Theatre this past weekend…
Thanks crew. What a special place - the venue is operated by members of the Optimist’s Club, which, fun fact, my father was a founding member of. Shout out to all the boys that made the show happen. I have to apologize, in the audio portion of today’s “Check-in” I say “The Mac Murray Theatre in Regina” not “Arcola” - I’m in the city as I write this…so it’s on my mind. Nonetheless, thank you Blake Brownridge and the rest of the Optimist’s Club for a wonderful evening.
I’m going to be focusing my writing efforts on paid subscribers for the foreseeable future. I have a winding narrative that has been bouncing around for a few years that I feel I could begin to unravel as a writing project. On some levels a deep dive into the album conceptually but also present another layer to the recording. I also thought it would be cool to have a real-time document where I edit my way through an overview of each specific song. One challenge I have experience in the promotion of this album is how to describe it and/or its themes in a couple sentences. Either way, a deep dive is coming.
I’m doing some outreach over the next few weeks too. The proverbial knocking on doors. Maybe some literal knocking on doors. Things are ramping up with festival performances, show announcements, merch drops, music visuals, heck…I’m producing a documentary and a couple upcoming albums…let’s go. This Substack and it’s subscription options are hands-down the best way to keep wind blowing in the sails and our continued focus on the creation of art and greater storylines. Thank you to all those that assist in those efforts.
After the weekend at the farm, we did a quick shoot after I bought a bag of black salty liquorice.
