2023 y'all. Good stuff.
At the beginning of last year I took a struggling Mailchimp account and exported twelve-hundred emails into an Excel sheet to upload to Substack. It was an act of consolidation to tidy up my musings (many of which still live on my website as it provided the initial home for my prose.) I passively snagged a couple hundred more readers along way and wanted to express a genuine thank you.
I'm about to come back into the world musically and my vision for this platform is to have it as the greater liner notes. You open up a vinyl and you reach to read what was written. This is that and then some. I'm going to try and make it as unified as possible but there are numourous avenues to explore. And storylines. If there was a BB experience, it is one and many. For any of you who have been following my wife's writing, Belle Plaine's Weather Report, I strive to build a tone that is both complimentary and inspired by. We each began reading Annie Dillard who awoke the beauty of the craft.
What keeps me making music is also the artistry of the tools available. How I deliver my message has always been an extension of my curiosities. I moved thousands of records door to door for five years of my life - knowing the potential realities that existed on the other side of every door was the wonder. Hundreds of thousands of people and conversations. I often ponder if I have spoken to a million people, one at a time. I'm going to show up on this thing with the same spirit.
I have received investment and sustenance. The Universe provides and I throw it back into the music. A positive upwards perpetuation of life. My sister, Casey, says "Blake, you're a Manifestor, you have to tell people what you are doing!" So, don't be surprised if I start talking about movie concepts (because I honestly feel like Casey Jones from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles needs an origin film), half written books (ie The Quest for Real Country Music...if you know, you know), or some re-imagining of my past work. My wife reminds me that by having Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs completely filled we get to focus on self-actualization. As supporters you've allowed us that blessing.
One person at a time. So grateful for every one that answered their door.
