The last rally of Sadie is not an uncommon story. I’ve seen it. The good bye rally is a beautiful gift.

It's remarkable. It happened with my Dad as well. Unresponsive for a couple days and then up and at'er for 12 hrs before shuttin'er down. It's been quite the season of saying goodbye to loved ones. Man alive, Grandma Laila was a titan.

Speaking of John Steinbeck, when I was a copy editor at The Arizona Republic in Phoenix, a colleague wrote one of the best headlines ever for a story about problems in Monterrey, California's historic district: "Cannery Woe."

By the way, John Steinbeck was a full-fledged member of the Cult of 602. "According to his son, John Steinbeck’s ritual was to begin every writing session by sharpening 24 Blackwing pencils and placing them in a pot. He would write with one until it began to dull, then place it in an identical empty pot and take another until he had worked through all 24. Then he would sharpen them all and begin the process over again."

Of course he was. Amazing. How does the line go...I won't tell you when I win the lottery but there will be signs - 24 Blackwing 602. That said, I'm really digging the Vol 73s you sent, have one in my mouth as we speak. They discontinued them!

Man, I could just geek out on the Blacking website forever. $125.00 pencil sharpener. Glory be. Someday.

Grande Prairie was on the ropes a few years back. They got a loan from Edmonton folk fest and propped them up and they paid it back in 2023 and had another profitable year last year. They have another good line up for 2025. Walk off the earth, Jewel, and Serena Ryder. Louden Wainwright, Steve , Steel Wheels. A few of these are fan favourites and repeat from years before. It’s still good to see live music holding its own in GP.

Yeah, there are episodes worth of "the rest of the story" considering Regina Folk Fest. It's pretty easy to point fingers and have an opinion but the truth of the matter is its a layered onion that nobody will probably start peeling back publicly. I was rooting hard for everybody involved - hard to think its not gonna reorganize, recalibrate and reemerge. I mean, it's an institute in the province - just gotta make it about a killer line-up that's gonna sell tickets in Saskatchewan.
